No. 15 (The Value of Words) is an ongoing collaborative work with visual artist Heather Gordon. The choreographic work develops in tandem with visual works, as well as Gordon's previous conceptual work #2, which was based on playing actual rounds of the word-creation game Perquackey.
The work is comprised of sections, each of which vary in groupings (solos, quartets, etc) as well as level of set choreography. All are based in a movement vocabulary, but while the choreography of some sections is completely set, others are improvisations. During each performance, the sections and the sequence of their performance are chosen by random chance methods (dice, number drawing, etc.) Other elements of the performance, such as facings and the sound score, are also chosen by chance methods during the performance. The accompanying visual work is created by Heather Gordon, and changes based on the performance site.
"Watching No. 15, I realized that Justin is an experimental artist: that is, in each new project she isolates a few variables to play with and learn from... Perhaps this experiment will provide Justin with another layer to build into her next work. The results, I'm sure, won't be lost on her."
